Dynamical Refinement in Loop Quantum Gravity

abstract

In Loop Quantum Gravity, a quantum state of the gravitational field has a semiclassical interpretation as a three-dimensional lattice discretization of space. We explore the possibility that the scale of the lattice is only as fine as it needs to be in order to carry the dominant frequency excitations of the auxiliary fields living on the lattice. If we consider the gravitational field by itself, we may ask whether the dynamics of the theory predict refinement or coarsing of the lattice. We define and normalize coherent states that correspond in the semiclassical limit to closed FLRW spacetime, The EPRL spin foam model is our means for calculating transition amplitudes, and we examine the dependence of the transition amplitude on the choice of discretization for some of the states described.
