Coarse graining a quantum system with respect to the bare variables yields an open quantum system with time-dependent entanglement between the short- and long-distance degrees of freedom. In this talk I will discuss preliminary general results on the dynamics of the density matrix for the long distance degrees of freedom, based on work in progress with C. Agon, V. Balasubramanian, and S. Kasko.
