How the fuzzball conjecture resolves the black hole information paradox

abstract

Some 35 years ago Hawking argued that the formation and evaporation of black holes leads to a violation of quantum mechanics. A short time earlier, Bekenstein had noted that black holes should have a very large entropy, given by the horizon area. In string theory it turns out that the microstates corresponding to this entropy are 'fuzzballs' that have no horizon themselves; the horizon is an effective emergent concept. The large entropy of these solutions leads to a violation of the semiclassical limit at the horizon, and provides a resolution to the information paradox.
