(Generalized) Flux Attractors: Applying Black Hole Techniques to Moduli Stabilization

abstract

In a certain class of string compactifications (type IIB orientifolds), ordinary fluxes can be used to stabilize some of the moduli. By including, besides the usual H-flux, also generalized NS-NS fluxes, one can stabilize a larger set of moduli. In either case, the equations one must solve in order to fix the values of these fields and their masses can be quite complicated, but in favorable circumstances one can recast them as attractor equations, and take advantage of many techniques that have been used in the context of black holes. One can even obtain a generating function, depending on the fluxes alone, which determines the fixed values of the moduli. In this talk I will review the attractor mechanism and its applications to moduli stabilization in flux compactifications.
